Metabolic diseases, also known as metabolic disorders, are a group of medical conditions that affect the body's metabolism. Metabolism can be seen as the collection of chemical processes that convert food into energy and other nutrients. Metabolic conditions frequently involve abnormalities in how the body processes nutrients, stores energy, and disposes of waste. Diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome, and dyslipidemia are examples of common metabolic diseases.
Dosha imbalances, including Kapha imbalance, are mainly associated with metabolic diseases in Ayurveda, particularly conditions associated with impaired metabolism and excess weight gain. The following is how Kapha imbalance is linked to metabolic disorders:
Sluggish Metabolism: Kapha dosha is associated with heaviness, coldness, and sluggishness. When Kapha is aggravated or imbalanced, the metabolic processes slow down, resulting in poor digestion and inefficient calorie burning. This can contribute to weight gain and difficulty losing weight, both of which are common features of metabolic disorders such as obesity. High levels of anxiety
Excess Fat Accumulation: The Kapha dosha is prone to fat accumulation and storage. Excess fat deposits in the body, particularly around the abdomen, thighs, and hips, can result from an aggravated Kapha. This fat accumulation is a common feature of metabolic diseases such as obesity and metabolic syndrome, which includes lipid disorders, heart disease, fatty liver, and so on.
Ama Formation: A Kapha imbalance can result in the production of "Ama," which are metabolic toxins caused by improperly digested food. Ama disrupts normal metabolic processes, causes inflammation, and contributes to metabolic disorders. PCOD, hyperlipidaemias, high blood sugar, changes in liver enzymes, and so on
Insulin Resistance: Excess Kapha can cause insulin resistance, which is a symptom of metabolic disorders such as type 2 diabetes. Insulin resistance impairs the body's ability to effectively utilise glucose, resulting in elevated blood sugar levels. Diabetic kidney disease
Lethargy and Inactivity: An imbalanced Kapha can cause lethargy, inactivity, and a lack of motivation to exercise or participate in physical activity. This sedentary lifestyle can aggravate metabolic issues.
